Cary's first job was library work, so she could be surrounded by books. She moved on to become a lit teacher, so she could ask people to talk about books. She and her family love RV travel, because campers have time to read and share books.

Here's an excerpt:

A man sprawled on the lip of the terrace. At first glance, it was possible to hope he was drunk. He had convulsed, apparently, since the spare native grass was ridged, dug, tossed by his knees and feet, his elbows, his head. Dew had dampened his back and collected in his dark hair . . . sand had ground into a deep scrape along one cheek and clogged his mouth and clung to the wet part of one eye. Even so, it was easy to see what he looked like.  He had been handsome.
